In a coffee shop, in a city, a young man named Peter sits and waits for a friend of his to join him. He's ordered two coffees and is hoping his friend will pay for both of them when they arrive. He's not a rude or assuming person but he is a bit selfish and very "Hands On" in life. He tends to dress in formal sports wear and adorns an odd trinket or button on his lapel. Scooter, his friend, is trying to have his own life but Peter insist on them meeting up every day.
The door of the shop opens with a ding of the bell and in walks a nervous Scooter. He sits down across from Peter. "What is this?" He motions at the cups between them. "Did you get me a drink or am I getting us a drink? Don't answer that. I'm sure you didn't pay. You never carry money."
Peter shrugs. "I thought it would be nice for us to start today's adventure with some caffeine and sugar."
Scooter stiffly smacks the table then rubs his forehead. "We're not going on an adventure today." Peter tries to speak up and offer an alternative date for the outing he had planned but Scooter interrupts him. "Or tomorrow, or the next day. I'm done."
Peter leans back in his seat. "But Scooter, I'm just trying to brighten our lives."
"I already have a bright life. You're not trying to brighten my life. You're trying to brighten your own life because without me you don't have a life." Scooter takes a deep breath. "Take a dive into your own adventure. The waters warm out there."
Peter remains in his seat with a sunken feeling as Scooter stands up to pay for the drinks and turns to leave the shop. Before Scooter reaches the door Peter manages to vocalize one last parting sentence. "It feels like I've just lost my only friend."
Even though Peter's feelings were true to him, he does have other friends. However, none of his friends had ever been as important to him as Scooter was. They had always stood by each other. It was only in the most recent years that Peter had started using his friend. It took it's toll on his friend and drove him away. Now Peter was alone in the world, for he had invested so much of his future in what was now gone. He knew that he couldn't just sit at the shop all day so after he finished his coffee he went home.
He didn't go home to sulk or rest. Peter grabbed a bag and packed enough clothes and provisions for a few days journey. He immediately headed out without knowing where to go, leaving all of his plans behind. Many years would pass without word of where he had gone and what he had been doing. Eventually he would disappear.
